His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday 12th October visited the Shire Valley Transformation Programme construction site in Chikwawa to monitor the progress of construction works.
Speaking during the visit, the President reiterated his commitment towards financing the completion of the construction of the irrigation scheme.
“We want this project to continue bringing hope to the people. It is encouraging to hear from Martha Francisco and Chief Mpando their expectations for a better future from the irrigation scheme. This particular irrigation scheme will bring a difference to the nation.
The President underscored the importance of the project to the national economy.
“The SVTP will be a hub of industrialization through large-scale production. hence a great boost to the economy of Malawi. The future generation will acknowledge our contribution towards national development through this initiative. The construction of the railway line and good roads will be paramount to the success of this initiative,” he added.
The SVTP Project Coordinator Dr Stanley Khaila gave a brief overview of the SVTP and highlights from the project. Two representatives from the five registered cooperatives Martha Francisco of Chingalumba Cooperative and Chief Mpando of Mulambe Cooperative shared with the President different initiatives being undertaken in preparation for commercial farming.
14 large commercial farms are expected to be established in the Phase 1 area of the SVTP.
